Stephen
Marcussen's 20+ year career as a mastering engineer has seen the
evolution of sound media from LP and cassette, to compact disc and has
now entered the world of DVD audio.
In 1979, after 5 years of experience in the recording studio, Stephen ventured into the world of mastering. Stephen's first platinum success came by the way of "Hotter Than July" by Stevie Wonder in 1980. Following Stevie Wonder, he cultivated working relationships with a number of artists including Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, The Pointer Sisters, REM, The Rolling Stones and Barbra Streisand.
With the evolution of CD technology, Stephen was one of the first involved with early digital equipment such as Apogee A to D and D to A converters, Sony 1610/1630 systems, Yamaha CD reference cutters and the Neve Digital Transfer Console.
In the beginning of 1999, Stephen set out to build a multiple room mastering facility of his own. During the design and construction, he set up temporary shop on the former A&M Studios lot and mastered some of the biggest records of that year.
Stephen's "Marcussen Mastering" opened in July of 2000 with the launch of Studio A. This room was designed around the first all-analog multi-channel mastering console. His new state-of-the-art 5.1 and 2-Track studio has mastered a true diversity of albums in a wide range of genres including Elton John, Alice In Chains, Rick Braun, Jagged Edge, and Jaguares just to name a few.
Stephen continues to work with cutting edge artists, keeping current with technology in his pursuit to satisfy today's musical artists' creative needs.
